Reef Protection - Hook Island Reef
Summertime is proud to have been picked as one of the 17 marine Tourism Operator’s to take part in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Tourism Reef Protection Initiative which is funded by the Australian Government’s Reef Protection Package to help conserve high-value tourism sites and support frontline jobs along the Reef.
Activities we are undertaking over the 1.5 year project:
- Conducting in-water Reef Health and Impact Surveys (RHIS) which monitor the Reef’s composition and coral and uploading of data to the GBRMPA’s Eye on the Reef system.
- Reef intervention and conservation activities including the removal of coral-eating crown-of-thorns starfish and drupella snails
- Capturing imagery of the Reef and operational activities which to be used to develop materials to educate people about the beauty of the Reef and the need for its protection.
Sites visited during for these protection activities included Circular Reef and sites around Hook Island and Black Island Reef.
We love to encourage our guests to get involved in the activities to increase their awareness of the threats to the Reef.
